Mail in iOS 27 gets relevance-ranked search that works on every compatible iPhone, plus Siri AI features that read, write and act on email. The Siri features are in beta and need an Apple Intelligence iPhone set to English.

What ships now

  • Search finds the message you want. Results rank by relevance and intent, so a recent retailer order sits above that store's promotional emails. Apple says the most relevant results come first, even when a message is buried deep in the inbox.
  • Mail suggestions for quick actions. Mail offers suggestions based on a message's context, such as adding a flight to Calendar. MacRumors lists Calendar, Maps and Wallet examples.

Also reported by outlets

  • Suggestions reach third-party apps. MacRumors, 9to5Mac, iGeeksBlog and iThinkDifferent report it.
  • Typos and grammar get flagged as you type. MacRumors, iGeeksBlog and iThinkDifferent report it.
  • Smart Reply uses your writing style. 9to5Mac quotes Apple's website: Smart Reply "can now draw on a user's personalized writing style." Macworld and MacRumors report the same. iThinkDifferent says it is English only.
  • Faster loading and better badges. Messages load faster, search indexing is more reliable and unread badges are more accurate. 9to5Mac cites an Apple iOS 27 slide. iGeeksBlog reports the same three.
  • Calls pull from Mail. When you call an airline or a retailer, Call Context shows the matching flight or order number from an email. The work happens on the device. MacRumors, Macworld, iGeeksBlog and iThinkDifferent report it.

Beta: Siri AI in Mail

Apple labels Siri AI as beta in iOS 27.

  • Ask Siri on one email. Long-press a message, then choose Ask Siri to summarize it, find a tracking or flight number, or save an attachment. Swipe down for follow-up questions. MacRumors and iGeeksBlog describe it.
  • Siri acts on your mail. It can delete every email from one sender or add an email's details to Reminders, per MacRumors and iGeeksBlog.
  • Write with Siri. A button above the keyboard in compose drafts, rewrites or changes the tone of an email. Apple says Siri AI matches your writing style, punctuation and tone in Mail.

How to use it

  1. Search. Search from Mail's normal search field. iOS 27 changes how results are ranked, so the most relevant match can come first. iThinkDifferent says a banner explains the change the first time you search. No beta label; works on any iOS 27 iPhone.
  2. Ask Siri. Open a message, long-press it and tap Ask Siri. Beta; needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone and English. Source: iGeeksBlog, MacRumors.
  3. Write with Siri. In compose, tap Write with Siri above the keyboard and say what you want changed. Beta; needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone and English. Source: iGeeksBlog, MacRumors.

Who gets what

  • Every iOS 27 iPhone: the search ranking.
  • Apple Intelligence iPhones: Siri AI, Write with Siri, Call Context and Mail suggestions. Apple lists iPhone 16 and later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
  • English first: Siri AI and Mail suggestions, per Apple.
  • Not in the EU at first: Apple says Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iPhone. MacRumors and Macworld also name China.

Why it matters

Siri reading your mail is the useful part, but Apple limits certain server-side AI features with daily usage limits, and Siri AI is one of them. Apple says expanded access will cost money in the future, so Siri actions may change in price or limits.

Search ranking is the one change that applies on every compatible iPhone with no beta label, so rely on it first, and treat the Siri actions as beta until Apple drops the label. For Apple's new foldable, see our iPhone Duo price story.

We have not used these features ourselves. This explainer relies on Apple's page and the outlets above.
