9to5Mac reports that the features are rolling out now in the Maps app on iPhone, iPad and Mac. The report covers Apple's Detailed City Experience for Austin, Texas and a Formula 1 view of Circuit of the Americas.

What 9to5Mac and AppleInsider report

9to5Mac says the city view adds detail on elevation, buildings, trees, road features and landmarks. It names the Texas Capitol, Q2 Stadium, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Paramount Theater and the Congress Avenue Bridge as Austin landmarks.

9to5Mac also says navigation guidance improves, with more immersive visuals and extra road markings, and that the improvements also apply to Apple Maps on CarPlay. 9to5Mac's report doesn't name an iOS version.

For the race, 9to5Mac says the F1 experience brings detailed circuit maps and 3D landmarks to Circuit of the Americas. It says people attending in person will see race-day amenities, navigation and walking directions in Maps.

AppleInsider reports, in a report dated Oct. 14, that the Circuit of the Americas map shows grandstands, entry gates, rideshare locations and pedestrian walkways. It says Apple added custom art, including COTALAND.

AppleInsider also says the update adds new 3D landmarks: Apple Domain Northside, Black's Barbecue, the LBJ Presidential Library and the Paramount Theater. It says there is a new Maps Guide, Dylan Gossett's Austin Spots, and that the race is Oct. 25 and can be watched in the Apple TV app.

What Apple's pages say

Apple's Detailed City Experience availability list has 40 cities, including Dallas and Houston, and omits Austin as of Oct. 15.

Apple's Apple TV page calls Apple TV the new U.S. home of F1, with every Grand Prix, including practice, qualifying and Sprint sessions. Apple's April release says watching F1 on Apple TV requires a U.S. Apple TV subscription.

If you are in Austin or going to COTA

  • Open Maps on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, where 9to5Mac says the new features can be checked.
  • Look at the circuit and, if you are attending, the race-day amenities and walking directions that 9to5Mac describes.

Why it matters

Our assessment: the two reports together suggest the Austin circuit map covers the basics an attendee needs. Apple's April release described Miami's map with grandstands, entry gates and road closures, and AppleInsider reports grandstands, entry gates and walkways at COTA. Check Maps itself before race day.

Apple's availability list for Detailed City Experience omits Austin as of Oct. 15, while 9to5Mac reports the rollout is under way.
