On Oct. 8, 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent (its blog post is dated Oct. 9), which it calls a universal agent for work. It plans multi-step tasks, uses connected tools and returns finished work inside documents, inboxes and developer tools. It is a business product aimed at Google Cloud and Workspace customers.

What it does

Google's announcement says the agent can:

  • Work inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar.
  • Connect to Confluence, Microsoft Office and Teams, Slack, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Git and Jira.
  • Run from the web, mobile apps, desktop, the command line, Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Slack.
  • Create "coworker" agents from a plain description. Each gets its own Workspace account, including an email address.
  • Pick the model per job. Today that means Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude, with other models promised later.

Who gets it and when

Constellation Research reports the agent is in private beta, with general availability expected around the end of October or early November. Google's own post does not give a date.

It is built for Gemini Enterprise and Google Cloud customers. 9to5Google reports it is in private preview now, with wider availability "soon" for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans. Neither Google nor Constellation describes any consumer Gemini rollout, so people using Gemini on a personal account should not expect it.

Constellation says there is no separate add-on. Pricing is consumption-based, and the exact model for Gemini agent use will come later.

Admin and privacy controls

Google says each agent has its own cryptographically attested identity with least-privilege permissions. Every action goes to an audit trail attributed to the agent. Agents run in a sandbox with its own network boundary, and an Agent Gateway enforces the organization's policies on all traffic.

On cost, admins can set a hard spend limit on a project in the Cloud Billing Console, and the project's agent pauses when it is hit. Constellation says some project and individual caps arrive "in the coming weeks." Google also says its Smart Routing tool picks the model for each workload to deliver maximum performance at the lowest possible cost.

What buyers should know

Futurum says a Google representative told it Google does not intend to charge a per-seat license when the agent acts as a coworker in Workspace, with pricing details to come closer to wider availability. Otherwise there is no public rate card and no confirmed ship date, so precise usage-cost estimates have to wait for Google's pricing details. Teams already paying for Claude may like that it is a supported model choice. Ask Google for pricing before committing.
