An AI agent can now buy from Shopify stores for you. Shopify's help page says you approve every order by default, and that an optional budget lets the agent pay without asking. Shopify also says purchases within your permissions are yours, even when the agent misreads you.

Shopify's shop.md is the page that connects an agent to your Shop account. Shopify's pages do not say which countries it covers or whether connecting costs anything, so check both before you rely on it.

What it does

A connected agent can search products in plain language, prepare a checkout with your details filled in, and place the order once you approve it in Shop. It can also reorder past purchases, track orders and read a store's return policy, Shopify's help page says. Search is ranked by your Shop personalization if you are signed in, and shop.md says anonymous search works too.

Features vary by agent, platform, store, payment method and transaction, per the same page. The integrations are for personal use only, and an agent may not run as an unattended background service that reaches your account without you directing it on your own device.

The Verge reported the launch on Oct. 13 and puts the catalog at over a billion listings. We could not find that figure on Shopify's pages.

How to connect

Shopify's steps:

  • With a personal agent such as OpenClaw or Hermes, give it the Shop skill link and ask it to install the skill.
  • With an agent platform such as Muse, follow the platform's prompts to connect your Shop account.
  • When sign-in is needed, you get a link to open in your browser to verify the connection.
  • Sign in only on Shop's own authorization screen. Never give a passkey or verification code to an agent.

shop.md also has "Add to ChatGPT" and "Add to Claude" buttons.

Approval, budget and your data

By default the agent prepares the checkout and you approve the purchase. In the Shop app, under Account then Connections, you can turn on "Allow agent to pay for me" and set a weekly, monthly or total budget, which Shopify says you can revoke at any time. The agent tries your last-used card first, then other saved cards.

Shopify says a dispute over a purchase the agent got wrong may fail, and that the agent accepts a store's shipping, refund, return and cancellation policies for you. The agent may receive, per the same page:

  • Your name, email, phone number and shipping and billing addresses
  • Card brand, type and last four digits, not the full number
  • The store, items, taxes, shipping, fees and total for each approval
  • Order information from Shop

Some purchases use a one-time token or virtual card, and the charge appears as "SHOPPAY*[store name]". Disconnecting stops access but does not delete what was already shared, and the agent maker's own privacy terms then apply.

Beside Amazon and Google

Amazon has gone the other way. TechCrunch reported on Sept. 21 that Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent, with an error calling it an "unauthorized AI agent." Google's agentic checkout, announced in 2025, buys with Google Pay, asks permission first and covers eligible U.S. merchants, including select Shopify stores.

Why it matters

Shop is a link between any agent and Shopify stores, not a single assistant, so the trade is control. A budget makes the agent a purchaser without per-order approval, and Shopify says you carry the result of its mistakes.

Who should try it

Our read, untested: we have not connected an agent. Try it for reorders and small buys with approval left on, and wait on the budget setting until you have watched a few checkouts. Check that your country is supported first, since Shopify's pages do not say. If you want a permission prompt on every purchase inside Google, Google's agentic checkout is the alternative, for eligible U.S. merchants.
