How it compares on price with the M5 Pro MacBook Pro

This is a price comparison only. We have not tested either laptop. Apple's pages list M5 Pro MacBook Pro configurations at 1 TB and above, so there is no 512 GB match for Microsoft's cheapest model.

Memory / storageSurface Laptop Ultra (15-inch)MacBook Pro 14-inch, M5 ProMacBook Pro 16-inch, M5 Pro
24 GB / 1 TB$2,999.99 (18-core CPU)$2,499 (15-core CPU, 16-core GPU)$2,999 (18-core CPU, 20-core GPU)
48 GB / 1 TB$3,999.99 (20-core CPU)$3,299 (18-core CPU, 20-core GPU)$3,599 (18-core CPU, 20-core GPU)

Apple's prices are the amounts on its US pages for the silver, standard-display configurations at 10:10 a.m. ET, before tax. Apple's 14-inch M5 Pro configurations on that page start at $2,499 and its 16-inch at $2,999.

At 24 GB and 1 TB, Microsoft's price is 99 cents above the 16-inch and $500.99 above the 14-inch. At 48 GB and 1 TB it is $400.99 and $700.99 above them.

Why it matters

The $2,599.99 model has the smallest drive, 512 GB, and a 1 TB drive adds $400. Anyone comparing against Apple's 1 TB starting point should use $2,999.99.

Microsoft also ties the Windows edition to memory, so Pro arrives only at 32 GB and above.

Trade-in terms for MacBook owners are covered separately in our trade-in story.
