athenahealth said on November 2, 2026, that patients can now connect their official health records to Anthropic's Claude. The company calls the connector the athenaPatient MCP, a server built on the Model Context Protocol, and says it is available starting that day to Claude Pro and Max users in the US. If you log in to an athenahealth patient portal, this announcement is about you.

What athenahealth announced

According to the athenahealth press release, datelined Boston, patients add the athenaPatient MCP connector in Claude's settings and then ask questions in natural language. Claude can reference lab results, vitals, medications, health conditions, immunizations, visit history, diagnostic reports, allergies, procedures and care plans.

Access is tied to the patient. The release says patients sign in directly with their athenahealth credentials, choose which information to make available, and can revoke access at any time. It describes no other setup, and we have not tried the connector ourselves.

Paul Brient, athenahealth's chief product and operations officer, is quoted: "At its core, this is about helping patients get value from their own healthcare data." Syed Mohiuddin, Anthropic's head of healthcare, says athenahealth "is giving patients a way to bring their own records into Claude when they choose to, so they can explore those questions and feel more confident and prepared in conversations with their care team."

The release also cites an August 2026 Pew Research Center survey, which it says found that 34% of US adults have used AI assistants for health purposes. It closes by calling the Claude launch "just the beginning," without saying what comes next.

What the release does not say

The release does not address HIPAA or whether Anthropic uses the data to train its models. Before you connect anything, read Anthropic's and athenahealth's privacy terms, because this announcement does not answer those questions for you.

It also gives no pricing beyond naming the Pro and Max plans, and says nothing about availability outside the US or about a Free-plan option. We are not filling those gaps with guesses.

What this means for you

If you are an athenahealth patient on Claude Pro or Max in the US, you can now point Claude at your own records and ask about them in plain language. The stated use is preparing for conversations with your care team, not replacing them. Claude's answers are only as reliable as the model, so check anything that affects your care with a clinician.

If you are on another plan, outside the US, or with a provider that does not use athenahealth, the release offers nothing yet. Anthropic's other recent plan changes are in our look at the Claude Max and Ultra tiers, and another Pro and Max feature limited to the US is Claude Duet. How far people expect AI to go in their work is the subject of Anthropic's own survey.

What we checked

We read the athenahealth press release on November 2, 2026. It is the only source for this story. We have not tested the connector and have not read the privacy terms of either company, and we cannot say how the data is stored or used.
