Earlier reports
The Information reported on Oct. 23 that Instacart had explored a sale and held preliminary talks with DoorDash and Uber. Reuters, relaying the Journal's report, says the Uber talks are no longer active.
The two companies have been here before. Back in 2021, DoorDash held talks to buy Instacart, at a likely price of $40 billion to $50 billion, according to a report at the time. Those talks fell apart, partly over concerns about antitrust approval.
How big each company is
Market value is not part of any report, so this is our own approximate math. We multiplied each company's latest share count from its quarterly filing by a Monday afternoon share price.
| Company | Shares outstanding | Price used (per share) | Approx. market value |
|---|---|---|---|
| DoorDash | 433,295,654 (Class A and B) | 168.90 | about $73B |
| Instacart | 231,500,067 | about 61 | about $14B |
Share counts come from DoorDash's 10-Q (filed Aug. 5, as of July 30) and Instacart's 10-Q (filed Aug. 7, as of July 31). Prices are secondary: DoorDash from Investing.com at about 3:54 PM ET, Instacart from TipRanks in the afternoon. Treat both values as rough.
What this means for you
DoorDash and Instacart customers see no change today. No deal has been announced, and any deal would face antitrust review before it could close. There is nothing you need to do.
