Google Meet on Android now has a way to move from watching a live stream to joining the meeting with audio and video, Google says in its Workspace Updates post. It is for viewers invited to both the live stream and the main meeting. Rollout starts Oct. 19.

How the switch works

Google says viewers can switch roles on Android from the meeting title, the live streaming badge, or the info button in the overflow menu. It says the in-app workflow "eliminates the need to reopen join links or switch apps."

Google's post says existing meeting access permissions and domain policies apply, and only eligible viewers see the entry points. It says role switching is already available on iOS and web. Google's screenshot in the post shows an Info tab with a "Leave and join the call" button.

Who gets it and when

Google lists availability for all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and users with personal Google accounts. For Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, it describes an extended rollout, more than 15 days for feature visibility, starting Oct. 19, 2026.

For admins, Google says, "There are no administrator controls for this feature." For end users, it says eligible viewers will see an option to move into the main meeting as an active contributor.

What a host sets up

Google's post does not describe any host setting for this switch. The condition it gives is that the viewer was invited to both the stream and the meeting. A related feature covers large meetings: Google's May post says that when an adaptive meeting reaches its contributor limit, extra users are redirected to the live stream.

Google says that redirect is on automatically for meetings hosts make adaptive under Meet Settings, Host controls, Meeting access. It lists Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, Education Plus and the Teaching and Learning add-on for it, a narrower audience than this switch.

Why it matters

Our assessment: this is a small fix to an awkward step. A viewer who is also a participant no longer has to find the join link again. Because it depends on being invited to both the stream and the meeting, a viewer who sees no option may not have been invited to the call.

What is not confirmed

Google's post gives no per-account rollout date beyond the Oct. 19 start. It says "You can now" switch, but the rollout dates mean you may not see it for 15 days or more after Oct. 19.
