9to5Google reports that Google is developing a next-generation Google TV Streamer, citing a source familiar with the matter. We found no announcement from Google, and 9to5Google has no launch date. Here is what the report says and what it means for buyers.
What the report says
9to5Google reports that development is underway. 9to5Google says the new device keeps the same general design with a narrower width, and that microphones on the device itself will listen for "Hey Google" commands.
Presence sensing is also reported; 9to5Google notes TCL launched the first Google TV with that feature last year. 9to5Google says the next model will have a faster processor and more storage than the current 32GB.
According to 9to5Google, the remote is largely the same but adds two shortcut buttons beside YouTube and Netflix, and the Find My Remote button stays on the back. It gives no launch date.
It notes a four-year gap between the Chromecast with Google TV 4K and the Google TV Streamer, and that this refresh follows Google's $50 price increase on the existing unit in August.
Why it matters
The report points to a more capable streamer, if it holds. Built-in microphones would let you talk to Google without the remote. Presence sensing is a feature TCL's Google TV launched last year, which 9to5Google says turns on the Google Photos screensaver when someone enters the room.
Should you buy now or wait
The Google Store lists the current Google TV Streamer (4K) at $149.99 (checked October 10), in line with the August increase 9to5Google mentions. Amazon listed the Hazel model at $149.00 that day (ZIP 03063), but quoted delivery for October 21 to November 6, so it is not a fast-shipping option there. A Porcelain option was shown from $194.88.
There is no launch date, so waiting has no end date. If you need a streamer now, the current one is on sale. If you want microphones or presence sensing, wait.
What we could not confirm
We found no Google announcement of this device. We relied on the 9to5Google report and did not see the source ourselves. Price, storage, processor and launch date for the new model are unconfirmed.
