Google says the Google Play services v26.40 update, dated October 12, 2026 in its release notes, lets Google Wallet on phones scan to add receipts. Android Police spotted the entry; Google's notes list no regions and no rollout dates.
Why it matters
The notes say the update was released, not that every feature is on your phone. Google gives no regions or schedule, and its page carries the caveat that some features may be experimental and available to certain users. Receipt scanning has the least detail: Google has not explained how it works or which receipts it reads.
What changed in Wallet
Google says the update brings four Wallet changes, all tagged "Phone":
- Scan to add receipts: "you can now scan to add receipts."
- Google Pay on Chrome for Android skips the Payment Request screen when you give merchants your name, email and phone number.
- Merchant names are improved in Google Wallet transaction notifications, per Google.
- A new in-app message center in Google Wallet.
What changed in the Play Store
Google says Google Play Store v53.6, also dated October 12, brings four changes, all tagged "Phone":
- Ask Play gives summarized insights and direct citations from real user reviews, to help answer questions about apps, per Google.
- New tag chips at the top of the Listen cube in Collections, which Google says make it easier to filter and discover specific types of content.
- AI Summary in Community Posts, which Google says lets you catch up on trending discussions and tap through to the original posts.
- App content from installed apps with an active subscription can be found in the Subscription center.
What Google has not said
- How receipt scanning works, which receipts it supports, or what happens to a receipt after you add it.
- What the Wallet message center will show.
- Which countries get any of these changes, or when a given phone receives them.
Who gets it and when
- Device type: every item above is tagged "Phone" in Google's notes.
- Regions: not stated for any item, including receipt scanning.
- Rollout dates: Google's page gives only each version's release date, October 12. No staged-rollout schedule is given.
- Android WebView 156, dated October 7, is listed separately and is not part of Play services.
How to update Google Play services
Google's help page for Play services gives these steps:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your profile picture, then All services.
- Under "Privacy & Security," tap System services.
- Under "Available updates," tap Google Play services, then tap Update.
If Google Play services is not listed under "Available updates," Google's pages we read do not say how to confirm which version you have, so we are not stating that screen. Menu names can differ by phone.
