Owners of the base Kindle 2026 report a glowing screen edge, mostly in dark mode at high brightness. Outlets report different Amazon wording, and the reporting does not settle whether the glow is a defect.
Which Kindles are affected
- Model: the base-model Kindle 2026, in plastic and aluminum versions. The Verge says the issue "appears to affect" both materials in all colors.
- Symptoms: shadows around the screen edges or visible LED strips, most noticeable in dark mode, per The Verge and Good e-Reader.
- Other models: Android Authority reports the issue appears to affect only the standard Kindle, and that the 2026 Colorsoft and Paperwhite "should be free of this problem." Android Central says those two are still available only for pre-order.
What Amazon says
Outlets quote Amazon describing the same conditions in different terms.
- To The Verge, spokesperson Katie Condon said: "In certain, highly specific conditions, such as using dark mode at a higher brightness settings in a dark environment, customers may see a subtle glow on the edge of the display on devices with colored bezels. This can be mitigated by adjusting the front light to a lower level."
- To Android Authority, Amazon said the glow "was expected in order for us to achieve a color bezel." Good e-Reader and Pocket-lint carry a similar statement.
- Good e-Reader writes that Amazon is aware of the issue and that a manufacturing problem may have caused defects in the current batch.
- An Amazon spokesperson, as Android Authority and Pocket-lint quote it: prominent light bleeding in dark mode "is often considered a defect. Users experiencing severe light bleed on new units are typically advised to exchange the device."
What owners can do
- Lower the front light. Amazon says this can mitigate the glow, per The Verge. Good e-Reader recommends a lower brightness setting in dark mode.
- Check your unit. Turn on dark mode at full brightness in a dim room and look for glow along the screen edge. Then lower the brightness and compare.
- Ask for an exchange if the glow is severe. Contact Amazon's Kindle support through live chat, as Good e-Reader recommends. Good e-Reader says users often get a replacement before sending the old unit back. An Amazon spokesperson says severe bleed is typically handled by an exchange.
Why it matters
The two readings lead to different outcomes. If the glow is a conditional effect, lowering the front light is the workaround. If some batches are defective, the exchange guidance Amazon's spokesperson gave points to replacements for severe cases. A buyer with a visible glow can try lower brightness, then contact support.
What is not confirmed
- Batch scope. Good e-Reader reports defects in some current batches. Android Authority repeats it citing Good e-Reader, and The Verge attributes it to Good e-Reader. Amazon's on-record statement to The Verge describes a conditional glow.
- Unit count. None of the reports we read gives the number of affected devices.
