Gemini Notebook is now also a Connected App in the Gemini app, so you can work with your notebooks without leaving a chat. Google announced it in a Workspace Updates post dated Oct. 23.

What you can do

Type @Gemini Notebook in a Gemini chat, or let Gemini pick it on its own for a relevant prompt. Google lists these actions:

  • Manage notebooks. Create, edit or delete a notebook.
  • Manage sources. Add, update or delete sources in a notebook. Google's example is adding a copy of the current chat to a notebook.
  • Save notes. Save key notes to a notebook.
  • Look things up. List your notebooks and their sources, or answer a question using context from your notebooks.

Who gets it and when

Google says it is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and people with personal Google accounts. For Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains it is available now. The post gives no date for other domains. Google's Gemini Apps Help page says the feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not have reached your account yet.

Google's Gemini Apps Help says that for now the Connected App works only on gemini.google.com and in the Gemini mobile app. It does not work in the Gemini Mac app yet.

The settings

  • End users. The feature is on by default globally, and off by default in the European Economic Area (EEA). You can change it in Settings > Connected Apps in the Gemini app.
  • Admins. Access is on by default and runs through the Gemini and Gemini Notebook access settings. A person can use the Connected App only if both Gemini and Gemini Notebook are on for their group or organizational unit (OU).

Why it matters

Our read: this moves notebooks from a separate place you visit to something a chat can reach. Saving a conversation into a notebook, or asking a question against one, now takes a single message instead of a trip to another screen.

Our read: the on-by-default setting is the part to check. Anyone who does not want chats to reach their notebooks can switch the app off in Connected Apps, and in a Workspace organization the admin settings decide first. In the EEA it is off until a user turns it on.
