Apple's service page for HomeView lists one out-of-warranty figure for both models: $279 under "Other damage." The display costs $299. 9to5Mac spotted the listing on Oct. 13.
What Apple lists
Figures from Apple's service page, the same for the standard and wall-mounted models:
- Out-of-warranty "Other damage": $279 estimated
- With AppleCare, "Accidental damage": $39
- AppleCare+ plan price: $2.49 a month or $24.99 a year, until cancelled
Apple's page says the final fee is set after inspection, may be subject to tax, and may add a shipping fee.
Repair or replacement
Apple's service page gives no separate price for a cracked screen or a failed speaker. 9to5Mac says that suggests Apple may replace whole units, and notes Apple has not said whether the fees cover replacement or component repair. We could not confirm either from Apple's page.
What AppleCare+ changes
On its AppleCare page, Apple lists "unlimited repairs for drops and spills" and Express Replacement, where it ships a replacement before you return the old unit. Apple's warranty text says the standard warranty does not cover accidental damage.
Why it matters
The $279 figure is 93% of the $299 price, so an out-of-warranty fix is close to buying a new one. Our arithmetic: $39 instead of $279 is $240 less, and a year of AppleCare+ at $24.99 plus $39 is $63.99. Wall mounting adds mount and adapter costs on top of the price.
Is AppleCare+ worth it
Our read, untested: we have not used HomeView. With any out-of-warranty fix at $279 on a $299 display, AppleCare+ at $24.99 a year is cheap cover, and worth taking for a unit in a kitchen or a home with kids. Skip it only if you would rather replace the display at $299.
