Apple executives told YouTuber MrMobile that the iPhone Duo's folding display is custom to Apple's specification, with no off-the-shelf parts, 9to5Mac reported Oct. 15. The full interview went up Oct. 14. Pre-orders open Friday, Oct. 16.

The Samsung question

9to5Mac says Samsung is widely reported to be the key display supplier, so some say Apple is "using a Samsung display." Host Michael Fisher asked what is straight from the factory and what Apple designs.

In the exchange, 9to5Mac attributes to Rich Dinh, VP of Hardware Engineering, that Apple works with several manufacturers but starts from its own goals. JP Guillou, senior director of display technology for iPhone, said the display "doesn't exist at the vendor until we start working on it."

Dinh added there is no "pre-cooked shelf of components," and that Apple customizes "down to the nanometer." In the exchange quoted by 9to5Mac, Apple's executives did not name Samsung. The name appears only in Fisher's question.

What else they covered

On why now, Apple's executives said existing foldables fell short, so the team started from scratch by asking what a foldable must be to be an iPhone. They also described matching proportions on the outer and inner screens so content scales without distortion. Apple's announcement confirms both displays share an aspect ratio.

On the inner screen's nano-texture finish, the executives said designed micro-lenses scatter reflections so the surface looks flatter, and a custom anti-reflective coating limits washed-out color.

They also said, in the same segment, that Netflix fakes a reflection in its fold animation using the hinge-angle and light sensors. Apple's newsroom lists Netflix among apps using the fold design but does not describe that animation.

Durability and the camera

On durability, the executives said coatings and materials were chosen part by part, including the hinge, and that the phone was tested against everyday use, including new flex poses. Asked how many folds it survives, they declined to give a number. In the interview published Oct. 14, Apple's executives gave no fold-cycle figure.

Apple says the iPhone Duo's specifications include:

  • A cover layer using a custom polymer, with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry.
  • Grade 5 titanium.
  • Ceramic fiber inserts in the antenna splits.
  • An IP68 rating, though Apple's specs say water resistance is not permanent.

Apple's executives also said an under-display camera keeps the inner screen unbroken. They said the sensor gets less light, and the A20 Pro's processing compensates. It is meant for FaceTime on the big screen, they said, with the rear cameras the pick for quality shots.

Host Fisher said in the interview his hands-on found the camera muddier than the cover camera, and the executives did not dispute that. Asked about a flip or trifold next, they picked neither.

Around launch

Sonos 27.2 adds iPhone Duo support in folded and unfolded modes, 9to5Mac reports. For the heat question, see our hinge and heat story. The pre-order checklist covers setup before Friday.

Why it matters

The trade-off is a strong sourcing claim against a missing durability number. Custom specs answer the "just a Samsung display" argument, but they say nothing about who makes the panel or how long it lasts. Our assessment: the interview is Apple's own account, so independent crease and fold testing after launch matters more.
