Amazon lists Apple's 13-inch MacBook Neo with 512GB and Touch ID in Citrus at $756, $43 under its $799 list price, as of 7:14 a.m. ET, Oct. 17. Amazon.com is the seller. The laptop has an A18 Pro chip and 8GB of memory.

9to5Toys flagged the drop as a rare one and expects it not to last. We have no end date from Amazon.

Price as of Oct. 17.

Is a $43 discount worth much?

It is about 5 percent, which is small. The same report says cash discounts on the Neo have been close to nonexistent, and that before Apple raised the price by $100 in late June, offers were about $10 at best. That history is the outlet's account, and we did not verify the price increase independently.

Our reading: a few dollars off is not a reason to buy a laptop you were not already considering. It matters if the 512GB model was already your pick.

Apple's refurbished unit is cheaper

Apple's refurbished store lists a MacBook Neo in Citrus with the same chip, 8GB of memory and 512GB of storage at $679 when we looked. That is $77 under Amazon's new unit.

Refurbished stock changes without notice, so it may not be there when you check. Our reading: if you accept a refurbished machine, Apple's listing is the better price. If you want a new one, Amazon's is the one to look at today.

What we could not confirm

We only checked the Citrus listing, so we cannot say whether other colors share the price. Open the other color options on Amazon's page before assuming so.
