SanDisk's store listed the 8TB Desk Drive at $899.99 at 10:25 AM ET on Oct 14, 2026. Amazon listed the 8TB Desk Drive at $949.95 in a search at 9:52 AM ET; a later check showed it in stock but sold and shipped by a third party, True Modern Electronics, not by Amazon. Prices move, so check both before you buy. That works out to about $112 a terabyte at SanDisk and about $119 at Amazon.

The price context

TechRadar Pro's Steve Clark reports the drive's all-time low was $469.99 in March 2025 and its high was $1,600 in April 2026. So $899.99 is well above the low and well below the peak.

SanDisk's page shows a struck-through $1,999.99 and TechRadar cites $1,099.99 as the earlier price. Neither figure establishes what the drive recently sold for.

Against an internal SSD

TechRadar compares it with the Samsung 870 QVO 8TB, an internal SATA drive. Amazon listed it at $1,479.99 at 10:14 AM ET, in stock and sold by Amazon, which is $185 a terabyte.

The external SanDisk costs less per terabyte than that internal drive, and TechRadar calls the Samsung slower.

What you get

SanDisk lists up to 1,000 MB/s read and 900 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2, an AC adapter in the box, a three-year warranty, and support for macOS 14 and later and Windows 10 and later. It weighs 268 g.

TechRadar's review gave it four stars and measured about 1,032 MB/s read and 1,010 MB/s write in CrystalDiskMark.

What to know first

It needs its external power adapter, and TechRadar notes it connects over USB-C. It is a desktop drive, not something to slip in a bag.

Who it suits

In our judgment, it suits a desk setup that needs a lot of fast storage in one place: a photo or video library, a backup target, or a Mac or PC whose internal drive is full. We have not tested it.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you travel with your storage or need bus power from a laptop. A portable drive fits better. It is an external drive only, so it will not replace a drive inside your computer.

If you need less space, Amazon listed the 4TB Desk Drive at $699.99 at 9:52 AM ET, about $175 a terabyte. The 8TB is the better per-terabyte price.
