Apple sells the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 17 side by side in the US. The 18 Pro's listed starting price is $300 higher, but the two prices are not on the same terms (see below). This guide sets out what that money buys and who should spend it.

We compared the two phones only on Apple's own published specifications and prices. Where a figure is Apple's "up to" claim, we say so. We did not run our own tests.

Prices and availability

  • iPhone 18 Pro: from $1,199 (U.S.), or $49.95 a month for 24 months.
  • iPhone 17: from $899 (U.S.), sold unlocked so you can connect to any carrier later. Apple's price includes a $30 carrier-activation discount if you activate on AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.
  • iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders opened September 12, 2026. Sales began September 18.

Prices are from Apple's US store and checked on October 11, 2026. Prices can change.

The carrier discount matters. Apple sells the iPhone 17 unlocked from $899 and says that price includes a $30 carrier-activation discount. Check the final price at checkout, and compare it with your carrier deal before you decide.

Chip and battery

  • Chip: A20 Pro on the 18 Pro; A19 on the iPhone 17.
  • Video playback: up to 36 hours on the 18 Pro; up to 30 hours on the iPhone 17.

Apple says the A20 Pro and a new vapor chamber deliver the highest sustained performance in iPhone history. Apple's battery figures are "up to" numbers, so treat the gap as a direction, not a promise.

Display and size

  • Both have a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz.
  • The 18 Pro has a smaller Dynamic Island, according to Apple.
  • Weight: 211 grams on the 18 Pro; 177 grams on the iPhone 17.

The screens are the same size. Choose on weight and feel, not on the display.

Cameras

  • iPhone 18 Pro: a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture (f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4.0), plus Ultra Wide and Telephoto lenses.
  • iPhone 17: a 48MP Fusion Main camera and an Ultra Wide camera. It has no dedicated telephoto lens, but its 48MP main camera offers 2x "optical-quality" zoom, Apple's term for a sensor crop.
  • 4K Dolby Vision video: up to 120 fps on the 18 Pro's main camera; up to 60 fps on the iPhone 17.
  • Front camera on both: 18MP Center Stage.
  • Photographic Styles: version 3 on the 18 Pro, version 2 on the iPhone 17, per Apple's compare page. The 18 Pro adds texture and grain controls.

Variable aperture is the headline change. It lets the camera widen or narrow the lens opening, and the Pro controls let you set aperture by hand. A true telephoto lens is the other real gap between the two phones.

Software

Apple says both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 17 run iOS 27 with the new Siri and Apple Intelligence.

Storage, colors and ports

  • Storage: the 18 Pro comes in 256GB up to 2TB, according to Apple's press release. The iPhone 17 starts at 256GB.
  • 18 Pro colors: black, silver, glacier and burgundy.
  • iPhone 17 colors: black, white, sage, lavender and mist blue.
  • Port: the 18 Pro's USB-C supports USB 3. The iPhone 17's supports USB 2.

Who should buy which

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if:

  • You shoot often and want a telephoto lens, variable aperture or manual camera controls.
  • You move large video or photo files and want USB 3 speeds.
  • You want the newest chip and can pay $1,199 without strain.

Buy the iPhone 17 if:

  • You want the same 6.3-inch screen and core iPhone experience for less at Apple's listed prices.
  • You do not need a true telephoto lens or manual aperture control.
  • You prefer the lighter phone.

Verdict

For most buyers, the iPhone 17 is the better value.

It has the same screen size and front camera, and the everyday iPhone experience, at a lower starting price. The 18 Pro earns the extra money only if the camera, the telephoto lens or the faster port matters to how you use the phone. If none of those do, keep the difference.
