Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the next iPad mini will be "considerably more expensive" than today's, with a price closer to $799, according to 9to5Mac's reading of his Oct. 11 Power On newsletter. Apple sells the current iPad mini for $599 with 128 GB. Apple has not announced the new model or any price.

We could not read Bloomberg's newsletter directly, so Gurman's words here come from 9to5Mac's report. The photo above shows the current iPad mini, not the rumored OLED model.

What is reported

  • Price: "considerably more expensive," near $799, per Gurman via 9to5Mac. 9to5Mac says starting storage may increase.
  • Display: OLED for the first time, with thinner bezels (9to5Mac). It is unclear whether the panel matches the iPad Pro's tandem OLED, and 9to5Mac notes conflicting reports on 120Hz ProMotion.
  • Speakers and chip: upgraded speakers and a much more powerful chip. 9to5Mac believes it is the A20 Pro from the iPhone 18 Pro, which is the outlet's belief, not a confirmed spec.
  • Timing: a media event later this month, alongside new OLED MacBook Pros (9to5Mac). Earlier, Bloomberg put the OLED iPad mini and MacBook Pros "on or around" Oct. 27, as we covered in our report on the OLED MacBook Pro. Apple has announced neither.

Where $799 would land

Apple's iPad mini starts at $599 today. A $799 price would be $200 higher. Apple's 11-inch iPad Air starts at $749 on Apple's site, so $799 would sit $50 above it. Both Apple prices were checked on Oct. 11.

This is separate from Tuesday. Apple's Oct. 13 "Welcome home" event is about the smart home; see our HomeView story. The iPad mini is expected at the later October event.

Buy now or wait?

  • Need one now: buy the current model. It is $20 to $30 under Apple's price at three stores (the Best Buy deal ends tonight), and the new one is unannounced, reportedly later this month, and reportedly pricier.
  • Want OLED: wait, and plan for about $799. That is a rumor, and the price could differ.
  • Want the best display for the money: the 120Hz question is unresolved, so do not assume it. If the OLED mini lacks it, the 11-inch iPad Air at $749 stays a fair comparison.
  • Already own an iPad mini: nothing in the report forces a decision before Apple speaks.

What is not known

Apple has not confirmed a price, a name, a chip, 120Hz support or a date. The $799 figure is Gurman's report as relayed by 9to5Mac, and the A20 Pro is 9to5Mac's belief.
