Google is rolling out Chrome M156 on Googlebook, Mishaal Rahman says on X. Rahman's X bio reads "Community engagement for Android @ Google". The post says the update fixes issues with certain extensions, such as 1Password, and makes copy/paste work better, improves Save As and includes "much more".
What Google's post says
The post is short. It names three things:
- fixes for "certain extensions (e.g. 1Password)"
- better copy/paste
- an improved "Save As"
It then points to full release notes in a Reddit post that we could not read, so everything past those three items comes from other outlets. Google's post gives no build number.
What else is reported
Android Authority lists about 14 fixes and says build 156.0.8078.47 or higher is rolling out through Google Play. We have not seen Google's release notes, so these come from that one report, not from Google:
- a crash with 1Password-style extensions when third-party autofill is on
- goodbye pages from extensions such as Teleparty crashing all windows on uninstall
- a crash when dragging tabs between windows
- Alt+Tab being intercepted by fullscreen services such as GeForce NOW (holding Esc still exits)
- Reddit and Canva sign-in popups that could not be dismissed
- Google Docs clipboard errors with large tables or images
- Facebook Live stuck buffering
- missing or wrong site icons in the address bar
- broken right-click menus on some links in Incognito
- a Save As dialog fix, rolling out gradually
- duplicate filenames breaking extensions
The list also adds a new Alt+Shift+Enter shortcut for opening background tabs, better multiline editing in the address bar and some AI Mode refinements. PiunikaWeb matches the first eight fixes.
Still in development
Per that same report, these are not in M156 yet:
- multiple Chrome profiles
- tab group syncing
- automatic discovery of local Cast devices
It gives a workaround for Cast: turn on the Nearby devices or Local Network permission.
What to do
Chrome updates through Google Play on a Googlebook. Our Chrome 155 report covers Google's steps for forcing an update in the Play Store and for finding the Chrome version number under Settings, then Apps. Compare it with the build named above. Google's post gives none.
If you rely on a password manager extension, check that it works after updating. We read Google's post and the reports above.
What we checked
We read Rahman's post and the two articles linked above. We did not see Google's release notes or the Reddit post. For earlier Googlebook problems, see our launch report. If you are still setting up a Googlebook, see how to link an Android phone.
