Apple announced the HomePod mini 2 on Oct. 13, 2026. It is $149 in the U.S. and ships Oct. 30. Its headline feature, Siri AI, is not on the speaker yet, and the personal half of it needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad in the home. For the launch itself, see our event story.

Who should buy it

  • iPhone households with a recent phone. Apple's Apple Intelligence page lists specific models: iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16e, 16 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17e, 17 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone Duo. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are not on it. iPads: Pro and Air with M1 or later, and iPad mini with A17 Pro.
  • First speaker in a room or a desk setup. Apple says one speaker gives room-filling audio, two make a stereo pair, and a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later can use it as a speaker.
  • Anyone building toward Apple surround. Four mini 2 speakers work with the new Apple TV 4K; see the cost below.
  • People who want a cheap home hub. Apple lists it as a smart home hub with a temperature and humidity sensor.

Who should skip it or wait

  • Anyone buying for Siri AI today. Apple says it comes in "a future software update" and gives no date. It will be English only, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK, and Apple says it will not initially be available in the EU in iOS or iPadOS.
  • Households with only an older iPhone or an Android phone. Apple's footnote says Siri AI requires the owner of the home to have an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad.
  • First-generation mini owners who just want surround. See below.

The catches

  • Personal context. Finding a song a friend texted you or a recipe from your email needs a paired Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad, per Apple.
  • Everyone else in the house. Apple says that once Siri AI is on, people without such a device still get world knowledge, natural conversation and better music discovery. Apple says the speaker recognizes up to six voices.
  • Limits. Apple says features that rely on server-side models have daily usage limits, and that expanded access will be available "for a fee in the future."
  • Sound Glow. Apple says voice control of the lit top needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone.

If you own a first-generation mini

What surround costs

  • Four HomePod mini 2 at $149: $596

  • New Apple TV 4K (4th generation): $299, Apple's announced price from Oct. 13

  • Total before tax: $895, our arithmetic

  • Apple says surround needs the 4th-generation Apple TV 4K, which ships Nov. 13.

  • Our surround story has the breakdown and a Sonos soundbar comparison with its own dated prices.

Wall-mounting and other add-ons for the new gear are in our extra-costs story. For the same Apple Intelligence rule on the new display, see our HomeView story.

Against Echo and Nest

  • Google Home Speaker: $99.99 at the Google Store, with Gemini, as of 22:25 ET Oct 13.
    • Trial: the page says 30 days in its promotion for new subscribers and six months in its FAQ.
    • Gemini Live is listed under the Standard plan, $10 a month or $100 a year.
    • The store's speaker pages list no Nest Mini.
  • Echo Dot Max: $119.99 on Amazon, Amazon's newest Dot and the closest rival to a $149 mini 2.
  • Echo Dot: $79.99 on Amazon, the cheap option.
  • Echo Studio: $219.99 on Amazon, only if you need a bigger speaker.

All three Echo listings were in stock, sold by Amazon.com, with no deal badge; prices read 22:55 ET Oct 13.

Price gaps, our arithmetic:

  • $49.01 more than the Google Home Speaker
  • $29.01 more than the Echo Dot Max

Apple's case is the Mac and Apple TV tie-in, which Google's page does not claim.

Why it matters

The $149 price covers a speaker whose main new feature is not shipping, and that works best with a phone you may not own. Buying now pays for hardware, colours and surround support; the AI half is a promise until Apple dates the update.

Our call, untested

We have not heard HomePod mini 2. If you have an iPhone on Apple's Apple Intelligence list and want a second room or a desk speaker, pre-order the HomePod mini 2. If you are buying for Siri AI or surround, wait for reviews and the software date. If your first mini works, keep it.
