Photos of cracked inner displays on the iPhone Duo, which starts at $1,999 in the US, are circulating within a day of launch, with the cracks along the hinge. MacRumors reports that "almost all of the display faults are right along the hinge." Nobody yet knows how many units are affected or why.
What has been reported
The same report says several of the images are from demo devices in China, and that "the backstory for most of the images is unknown, and it's possible user damage is a factor." It adds that some early reviewers' fold tests showed no screen problems.
Tom's Guide describes Reddit photos of the inner display cracking along the hinge less than 24 hours after launch. It says owners from the US to China and Australia posted them.
One Australian owner said on Reddit that about six hours in, the owner heard a crack and the screen broke along the hinge, after fewer than 20 openings, according to that account. The owner reportedly got the unit swapped at the Apple Store on the spot.
What we could not find
- Scale: both outlets say it is unclear how many units are affected.
- Cause: handling damage is possible, and the photos lack context.
- Apple: we found no Apple statement on hinge cracks.
If your Duo cracks
- Scope: these are US figures from Apple's US pages, read Oct. 24, 2026. The owners cited above are in several countries, and other countries' terms may differ.
- Launch price: Apple's launch release says the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (U.S.), with availability from Oct. 23.
- Return window: Apple's returns page says you have 14 calendar days from receipt, with a receipt, in original condition with all included parts, accessories and packaging.
- Where you bought it: the 14 days apply to purchases made directly from Apple, online or in an Apple Store. Apple says products bought through other retailers must follow those retailers' policies.
- Carrier plans: Apple says returning an iPhone may not cancel your wireless account, and you stay responsible for that agreement.
- AppleCare+ fee: as of Oct. 24, 2026, Apple's fee page lists $99 for iPhone inner display damage, without naming the Duo. Apple's AppleCare page lists the Duo among AppleCare+ models.
- Warranty: Apple's repair page says the warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year and does not cover accidental damage.
Apple's pages do not say which warranty category a hinge crack falls into, so expect Apple to decide case by case.
Photograph the damage with the date visible and keep your receipt before you visit a store or contact Apple. That is our suggestion, not Apple's.
Why it matters
The hinge is the part every folding phone depends on, and a first-generation hinge has no track record yet. Whether a crack there is covered by the warranty or by AppleCare+ is, on Apple's pages, unstated.
Our AppleCare+ math runs the break-even on that fee. For how Apple expects the display to be replaced, its Repair Manual is now public.
Until Apple speaks or more owners post verified cases, treat this as an open question, not a confirmed pattern.
