Amazon lists the Ryzen 7 7800X3D at $347.98, against a $449.00 list price, and the newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D at $444.00 against $479.00. Both were sold by Amazon.com at 3:37 PM ET on Oct 14, 2026. PC Guide flagged the 7800X3D price.
The two chip prices
Prices as of Oct 14, 2026, both sold by Amazon.com, read at 3:37 PM ET.
The 9800X3D costs $96.02 more, about 27.6% (our arithmetic). Amazon displays discounts of 22% and 7% against those list prices, and we could not verify a price history for either.
What the chips share
AMD's pages list both as 8-core, 16-thread chips with 96 MB of L3 cache, a 120W default TDP and the AM5 socket. The 7800X3D boosts up to 5 GHz and the 9800X3D up to 5.2 GHz.
AMD lists the thermal solution as not included for either and recommends a liquid cooler, so you buy a cooler either way.
How much faster is the 9800X3D?
Tom's Hardware says AMD claimed the 9800X3D is 8% faster than the 7800X3D in games. Tom's measured a 14.7% lead across its 13-game suite at 1080p using an RTX 4090, and called the suite "admittedly cache-friendly." It adds that differences shrink with lesser cards or higher resolutions.
Our view: games limited by the graphics card may show a smaller gap.
The four-part subtotal
All three parts below were shipped and sold by Amazon.com and in stock at 3:13 PM ET on Oct 14, 2026.
- Board: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi, $154.99, typical price $175.99.
- Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-6000 CL30, 32GB (2x16GB), EXPO, $569.99, list $639.99.
- Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V3, $42.89.
The memory costs more than either processor. The board, memory and cooler come to $767.87 (our arithmetic). Adding the chips gives a CPU, board, RAM and cooler subtotal of $1,115.85 with the 7800X3D and $1,211.87 with the 9800X3D. It excludes the graphics card, storage, power supply and case.
The $96.02 gap is 8.6% of the cheaper subtotal. The premium is 27.6% on the chip alone and 8.6% on that four-part subtotal. The cooler is an illustrative price: we have not checked that it suits either chip, and AMD recommends a liquid cooler for the 7800X3D and 9800X3D.
One catch on the board
AMD says all AM5 boards work with all AM5 processors, with a note that a BIOS update may be required for Ryzen 8000 and 9000 processors on 600-series boards.
The B650 Tomahawk is a 600-series board. MSI's support page has listed BIOS updates that name Ryzen 9000 since August 2024, so a board that sat on a shelf may need a BIOS update before a 9800X3D boots. Check the BIOS version on the board you buy.
The 7800X3D is a Ryzen 7000 chip and does not carry AMD's note.
Our call
Our recommendation, from the prices above; we have not tested either chip. If your games depend on the processor, the 9800X3D's $96.02 is about 8.6% more on the four-part subtotal for a lead that Tom's Hardware measured at 14.7% in its suite.
If you play at higher resolutions where the graphics card is the limit, or you want to spend less, the 7800X3D at $347.98 is the safer pick. Whichever you choose, the $569.99 for memory is the bigger line on the receipt.
